About the Newbury Group

The Newbury Group was formed in October 1996 and is affiliated to the national Institute of Advanced Motorists.  Our aim, in making the roads safer for all of us, is to help associate members prepare for their advanced driving test.   Our associate members are all car drivers.  We regret that we cannot provide assistance for motorcyclists or commercial vehicle drivers preparing for their particular advanced tests.

What happens when I join?

When you join our group as a new associate you will receive our newsletter, and be most welcome at our regular meetings.  Of course, you want to pass your advanced driving test, so we will assign an Observer to help you.  All of our observers have passed the test, and have undergone further training to help them share the techniques with others.

Your observer will accompany you on a number of drives in your own vehicle and offer advice and suggestions on ways that you can improve your advanced driving skills.  These drives are always arranged to be at a time and location that is convenient for both the observer and yourself.  They will include driving in towns, on motorways, rural roads, dual carriageways and country lanes - although not always on the same day!

When your observer believes that you are almost ready to take the test, he or she will arrange for you to be accompanied on a drive by one of our senior observers.  This will get you used to driving in test conditions with someone new in the passenger seat.

There is usually a gap of about four to five weeks between applying for and taking the test.  You observer will be happy to help you refine and hone your advanced driving skills during this time.

You can find details of the test itself by following the link on our 'About' page.

What happens after I pass the test?

You become a full member of the Newbury Group of Advanced Motorists and of the IAM.  In addition to the newsletter published by ourselves, you will also receive regular copies of IAM magazine "Advanced Driving".  The IAM have negotiated discounts with a number of motoring services suppliers which may help you save some money

You will also, of course, be entitled to display the IAM badge on your car, and to purchase a variety of IAM branded goods.

But the main benefit of passing the test is knowing that you have made a positive contribution to making the roads safer for all of us.

How much will it all cost?

Joining the Newbury Group is via the IAM 'Skill for Life' package.  This costs £85 and includes

Once you have passed your test, you become a full member of the Newbury Group.  The annual membership fee (payable on your membership renewal anniversary) is £8.  The annual membership fee for the National IAM is £15.  Thus your annual outgoings after you have passed the test come to £23.
