The Newbury Group was formed in 1996 to help Associate Members prepare for the Institute of Advanced Motorists’ Advanced Driving Test. 

We have around 150 Members who include Associates, Full Members, Committee Members and Observers, and since we began some 550 drivers have passed through our Group to prepare for the Test.

Our main activities are helping our Associate Members, on a one-to-one basis, to raise the standard of their driving to take the Test, and training and maintaining our team of Observers that work with our Associates.  In addition we hold regular bi-monthly meetings where Full Members and Associates meet to hear a talk given by, usually, a specialist on a driving-related topic.

Our Committee is made up of ten Full Members, who work to oversee the administration, publicity, training and finances of the Group.

What do we offer?

We currently offer the Skill for Life and programme.

•  Skill for Life costs £139, and provides everything you need (inclusive of training) to prepare for and take the Test.

We also hold regular meetings and events, and produce a periodic newsletter for our Members.

We also give talks and presentations to local organisations whose members are interested in Advanced Driving.

What types of driver take the Advanced Driving Test?

All sorts!

Our Associates come from all walks of life, with a variety of reasons for wanting to raise the standard of their driving and take the Test.  For example:

• Enthusiasts

• Professional drivers

• Driving instructors

• Young drivers

• Experienced drivers who want to learn new skills, generally improve and update their existing skills

• Older drivers

• Drivers who have been involved in accidents and seek to be proactive in avoiding further accidents

• Drivers who have picked up penalty points

• Parents who want to improve their driving skills and safety

How do I join?

Whether you are interested in DriveCheck or Skill for Life the procedure is the same:

•     Obtain the relevant form from IAM Chiswick

•     Complete form and return to IAM Chiswick

•     When you receive your pack from IAM Chiswick contact the Newbury Group of Advanced Motorists as your chosen local Group
